Ballintubber Abbey

Ballintubber Abbey was founded in 1216 and is unique as Ireland's only royal Abbey which has been used continuously since its construction. Located in the townland of Ballintubber, it has traditionally been associated with St. Patrick and marks the start of the old pilgrim road to Croagh Patrick. The road is known as "Tochar Phadraig" and each year many make the journey by foot from the Abbey to the holy mountain, some 22 miles. Those who wish to partake in this walk are encouraged to contact Ballintubber Abbey at +353 (0)94 30934
