Clare Island

On a clear day, the spectacular outline of Clare Island is second only to Croagh Patrick as a beacon on the West Mayo horizon. Two ferry companies provide regular transport - "Clare Island Ferries" (Tel: +353 (0)98 26307) and "O'Malley Ferries" (Tel: +353 (0)98 25045). Both leave from the Pier at Roonagh, located ten minutes outside of Louisburgh. A 15th century tower on the island once was a stronghold of Clew Bay's Pirate Queen, Grace O'Malley, also known as Granuaille.
