Delphi and Connemara

West of Louisburgh, visitors are quickly engulfed by the awesome and stark beauty of Connemara. Fifteen minutes beyond Louisburgh is Lake Doo, also known as Doolough. This lake is synonymous with the suffering of the famine years, where in 1847 over 400 people perished in a tragic attempt to receive aid from the local authority, meeting at Delphi Lodge.

Delphi was given its name by Lord Sligo, who, after having visited the Oracle of Delphi in Greece, was struck by the similarity of this area of the original Delphi. Beyond Delphi Lodge is the Delphi Adventure Centre, a favourite location for adventure holidays, catering for families, companies as well as individuals who seek a challenge based "get away" in the breathtaking beauty of Connemara. Approaching Leenane and the Galway border, visitors come upon Aasleigh Falls. Those lucky enough to come in early summer will witness the falls surrounded by a mass of pink rhododendra.

Aasleigh Falls increased in fame after it was featured in the most dramatic scene of the film "The Field", starring Richard Harris and Tom Berenger.
