Hillwalking The Western Way: The Western Way stretches over 170 km from the magnificent fjord of Killary to the Ox Mountains. The route crosses rugged mountains, small roads and winding leafy lanes, across the shoulder of Croagh Patrick to Westport. Moving north, it covers boggy and remote expanses until reaching Bally castle and the Ceíde Fields. It then moves inland to Ballina and then on to the Ox Mountains. The Western Way passes through the Westport area and in fact intersects with the ancient Tochar Phadraig walk from Ballintubber Abbey (see section on Ballintubber Abbey). In addition to Croagh Patrick, Westport is a central location for hillwalkers, in close proximity to such ranges as the Nephin mountains to the north, the Sheffrey Hills and the Mweelrea Moutains. If you are interested in organised hillwalking in the area, the following resources may be of use. Croagh Patrick Walking Holidays Michael Gibbons' "Walking Ireland". Connemara Safari Walking Holidays, featured on RTE No Frontiers programme.
