Louisburgh

Ten minutes from the Croagh Patrick Visitor Centre is the charming town of Louisburgh, home to a number of Blue Flag beaches as well as the Granuaille Visitor Centre. Granuaille, also known as Grace O'Malley, is one of Clew Bay's most famous personalities. A sixteenth century contemporary of Queen Elizabeth I, she is best known as the Pirate Queen. Her grandfather donated the land upon which Murrisk Abbey was built in the fifteenth century. Remnants of castles owned by Grace herself dot the West Mayo countryside. According to local legend, she is buried on Clare Island.
