Mayo Abbey

Mayo Abbey ( Mayo of the Saxons) is a small village in Mayo situated ten miles to the south of the county town, Castlebar, and six miles to the north west of Claremorris. Mayo Abbey village today, with a population of approximately 1,200 people, gives little clue to its importance in the seventh and eight century as a major centre in the Celtic - Anglo Saxon Christian world. A monastery was founded here by St. Colman. For more than a thousand years it was the most important centre in the region becoming a Norman town and naming County Mayo, the third largest county in Ireland.
